Jenny Bae
Allan Johnston
- paintings – pastel drawings – vibrant colors - excellent work with reflection -water color - recurring bathroom theme
While walking through the art show i was most impressed with the work done by Jenny Bae. It was all extremely beautiful and shows a ton of talent. The different media used pieces all prove she has skill and great experience in art. I was dissapinted to see that she did not win “Best Of Show”, and think she really deserved it. In one of her pieces she drew a reflection from two glass balls, and it seemes to be done perfectly. From pastel, to painting, to pencil drawings, to water color, all are done incredibly and make it hard to find a flaw on the whole panel. I was very impressed.

Kyle Lambert
Allan Johnston
-paintings -”legends of hip hop” -vibrant colors – four large scale paintings formed into one
-Biggie, Tupac, Kanye, Public Enemy
I was very interested in Kyle Burns paintings because they create the same message that I have been working with in my paintings. Most of the pieces I have made this year have been of my favorite musicians. Recently, the music I have been hearing on the radio has been driving me crazy. I feel like the entire genre of Hip Hop has changed.

Max Ernst
Allan Johnston
-Surrealistic style -mostly oil on canvas -deforms bodies to give everything an interesting look – very detailed - seems like every painting has a really deep meaning to it
I became very interested in Max Ernst while looking at another artist that painted a psychedelic Portrait of him. I learned that he was captured by Nazis and placed in a concentration camp. After learning that and then seeing his art you can feel a deeper meaning behind all of his works. it is strange to think that every detail he made was done for a reason because he deforms everything. This deformation gives all of his paintings a look to them and makes them stand out more the details in his paintings are trippy beautiful and cause his painting to look unbelievably original.

Robbie
Allan Johnston
-mainly acrylic paint on canvas -psychedelic art – blending patterns with bright colors -beautiful pieces -a trippy look to each painting
I found this artist very interesting because every painting is of the same genre yet very unique. He uses and incredible blend of colors to make things stand out and appear psychedelic. Most of his art work is acrylic paint done on canvas, something that I attempt to do very often. On my last piece i painted an ocean scene and tried to make it look somewhat psychedelic. I can relate to many of his paintings because a lot of them look like what I often attempt to accomplish.

Alla Davidson
Allan Johnston
-Black marker/ink -some water color -trippy designs -abstract pieces -Subject not always obvious -looks like doodling - on large scale -different and unique
After looking at a lot of galleries online none of them stood out to me more than Alla Davidsons. He uses interesting patterns with what looks like a black marker or some sort of black ink, and then goes over with a light paint or water color. Most of his works look like organized doodling and is what I would like to accomplish in the future. His work is a lot like what I try to describe in my artist statement. He keeps his work fun and interesting to look at with the bright colors, trippy designs, and repetitive patterns. His pieces are exciting and jump out at you when observing them.

Max Beckmann
Allan Johnston
-Drypoint -Clustering – Unique Characters – Faces – Landscapes – Unproportionate portraits – Overlapping – No color
Max Beckmann, a Germn artist, makes great peices using drypoint. He clusters together different people, doing their own thing, and it forms a very interesting peice of art. I like the fact that he usees no color because it makes you really focus on his characters and does not make any of them stand out more than another. The way he mashes together all of his people is creative and looks great.
Portfolio Day Reflection Paper
12/08
On November 22nd I attended Portfolio day in Philadelphia and it was not a success at all. When I arrived I was very excited and jumped in line to talk to the people of Tyler School of Art. After waiting in line for an hour it was my turn and I grabbed my painting and put it on the table. Unfortunately, I then found out how dumb of an idea it was to only bring one painting and 2 sketchbooks to a portfolio day. The woman behind the table looked at my painting of Christopher Wallace, AKA “Biggie Smalls” and immediately said, “I can’t accept this painting.” That was only the beginning of bad news. She then said that, “ The only forms of portraits that we except are paintings of living people that are posing for you. And because he is dead I am pretty sure he didn’t pose for you.” When I heard this I knew that I did not even want to show her my sketchbook, but she asked me to and I didn’t want to be rude. After going through both of my sketchbooks she said, “ I can only except one of these drawings.” She disliked almost everything I had made except for one of my drawings. The only drawing that she liked was one that I made the night before a sketchbook check and absolutely hated. When she said that she really liked that drawing I knew that I was in the wrong place. The woman then said that I need more drawings of still life such as fruit or set up sculptures. She told me that no college in the exhibit would accept my work and that waiting in line to speak to them would be a waist of time. When I left I was very disappointed, but while waiting in line at Subway in the train station a girl and her mom absolutely loved it and gave me a lot of compliments. Even though my work is useless to colleges I am very happy that someone appreciated it.

Michael Beauchemin
Allan Johnston
- Used acrylic paints with an oil overlay for all paintings
- Trippy paintings
- Looks like a photo taken while the person was moving
- Great detail
- Crazy colors
- Looks like picture negatives in some
- Looks like childhood events
This artist really stood out to me because I am extremely interested in the way he changed pictures with vibrant colors and altered faces. He makes it look like it is the negative of a picture taken while either the person taking the picture, or the person in the picture was moving. In his statement he says that all of the paintings are mental images from his childhood. I can definitely see that because most of the paintings have children in them. They are full of detail and look amazing. I am also very impressed because they are painted on such a large canvas. They become a trippy image through the techniques he used. He would give some people a extra set of faded eyes or the face doubled and shifted down. If I were to shut my eyes and try and recall a mental image from my childhood they would look similar.

unknown Brazilian graffiti artist
Allan Johnston
- Ruins
- Landslides
- Demolitions
- Spray paint
- Great color
- Unique ideas
I am really impressed by this Brazilian graffiti artist. He takes ruins, landslides, and demolitions and turns them into works of art. He uses vibrant colors and makes his works stand out. It is an interesting way for him to express himself because not many people would want to turn a fallen down house into a canvas. On the graffiti he alters the shapes of faces and body parts. I love how he turns ruined construction and eyesores into beautiful works of art.
