Artist Statement

Art has always been a way for me to creatively illustrate my ideas, feelings, hobbies, and things I love. My favorite thing to draw is things that I see from my favorite movies or portraits of some of my favorite musicians. It is like I can re-create them to how I want them to be and somewhat show my appreciation for what they have done for me. Every piece of art I have finished is of something that has made an impact on me and I enjoy illustrating them. I have done pieces of Christopher Wallace (Biggie Smalls), Bob Marley, and Tupac, because they are my three favorite artists. Biggie’s lyrics always flow and tell a story that always creates and image in my head. I love to create pieces of things that I imagine while listening to these lyrics and helps me to explain why I enjoy listening to them so much. Many of the movie scenes or characters that I have created are because they all remind me of the first time I saw the movie and how much I enjoyed it. All of my works bring back memories for me, the same way some people use photographs. Although I enjoy creating portraits and scenes I have in my head, I also love to make doodles that always have a deeper meaning to me that isn’t so obvious to another viewer.

The doodles and other drawings that I make often remind me of things that happened in my life that is more fun to think of through a drawing. Most of the doodles I have are from after a trip or journey I have been on that brought me fun stories and was a good time. When I start doodling I like to just shut my eyes and draw what comes to my mind. I think of past events and try to visualize an entire day into one picture. Not only does art help me to relax but it also helps me to express myself through a personal and creative way.  I hope to continue to create art for the rest of my life and eventually move beyond making portraits of people and start to just illustrate what comes to my mind. Although I love to create portraits now I believe that I can make much more powerful art if I create only what is so meaningful to me that I do not need a picture to help me illustrate it.
